Hi everyone, was wondering how you apply for this?
A girl who lives near me has had RA all her life and she gets it, also she's learning to drive at 16 because of RA...
Mum really wants to know what we need to do, she had to give up her job to look after me, surely we're entitled to something?

Hi Hannah,

Try this link http://www.direct.gov.uk...isabledpeople/index.htm

It should take you to the disability benefits page of the Directgov website and it tells you how too claim.

You should be able to get DLA and your Mum may get carers' allowance as she gave up working to look after you.

Hope it helps.
Love, Doreen xx

You could ask the NRAS helpline to let you have their excellent booklet "How to claim DLA" I would imagine your Mum can claim Carer's Allowance s well.

Hi Hannah,

The forms are very long and tedious to fill in but don't let that stop you. It's well worth completing the pack and the NRAS guidelines are an invaluable help.

I would suggest that you start keeping a diary of your illness from now on ... just a few notes each day about how you are feeling ... include everything from your mental state (if you're feeling down) right through to joint pain, swelling, the lot. A diary is a very significant addition to the DLA application and can make all the difference to your being awarded it or not. And the longer you have to show them, the better. Also, when you complete the forms, answer every question in terms of your very bad days, not as you feel on that particular day or on good days.

Good luck with it!

I would also advise you to get help when filling in the forms, I always go to my local CAB they always have someone who knows how to answer the questions in the 'correct' way to give you the best chance of a positive outcome when applying.

Good luck
Ray
